Orbit Labs

Identity and site for a small research lab that explains hard science without shouting.

Floating cubes and glowing spheres on a dark ground

The brief

Orbit is a small materials-science lab with big results and a website nobody could read. They needed an identity and site that explain the work to funders without dumbing it down.

The work

The identity is built from the lab’s own diagrams: one line weight, one accent colour and a grid taken from their plotting software. Each research area opens with a single plain sentence before the detail.

Motion that explains

Short loops show processes the photographs cannot, such as a crystal forming or a coating curing. Each loop is under four seconds and stops when it leaves the screen.

Outcome

The lab used the new site in its last funding round, and two partner universities now link to it from their own research pages.
