Case study

Personal finance app

Tally

A money app that turns spending into a calm weekly ritual instead of a stream of alerts.

Smartphone resting on a dark grey ledge

The brief

Tally is a budgeting app for people who have tried budgeting apps before. Their early users said the product made them anxious: red numbers, constant pings and charts that only ever looked backwards.

The work

We replaced the alert stream with one calm weekly review. Spending is grouped into a few plain categories, and the app asks a single question each Sunday: what do you want next week to look like?

Design system

A small token-based system covers colour, type and motion across iOS, Android and web. Numbers use tabular figures and never turn red; overspending is shown as distance from a goal, not as failure.

Outcome

Weekly retention rose after the redesign, and the review ritual became the feature people mention first when they recommend the app.
